I have a bunch of music stored using FLAC, which I generally think compresses better than ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec) anyway. I found a great project that installs all the dependencies on Mac OS X:
It is too bad Apple doesn't embrace free standards and make their software compatible by default.
In the comments of this page there is a command to convert FLAC to ALAC using ffmpeg. This may also be useful.
